umm I was wondering if I should start a mini-hosting service on my site/server, and I've been looking for a PHP-based software that enables me to create subdomains for users automatically so that I can host their sites on my server. For now all I can do is to manually create subdirectories and ftp accounts for those members. Anyone of you know how to do this? I'd appreciate it very much if you can help. ^^

I only vaguely know about setting up servers...

but I would imagine you will need a LOT of space, and money in order to host other peoples' web sites.

Yeah, definitely. Actually I am already hosting Arctic Eclipse's new Mybb forum, but it requires me to manually set up the database and ftp account for him. All I want is a software that automatically generates database info and ftp for members who use my hosting service. XD

MySql is the database I use for my site, forum and other subsites. It is actually a database software, so guess it may not have anything to do with hosting. I can use mysql to create database for users manually, but still this is not really the idea of web hosting. I've looked into cpanel, but for some reason I dont think it is the right thing to use.

The easiest method is making a server that you host your own server and rolling from there. It fully depends on the server software you use (e.g. Apache scripts won't work with Abyss scripts won't work with Xerver scripts, and so on and so forth)

I'd guess you'd need a pretty good cpanel-esque thing, though. I'm not sure how to make one myself, but it seems somewhat of a challenge, and I'm totally interested in doing it.

Oh really? Sounds interesting, the idea here is to have a server configuration system that automatically generates a database for user who requests using my hosting service so that it looks more professional and that I do not have to configure their subdomains myself.

Oh yeah, 7 is Variant on Mysidia's forum(registered in Oct, 2009, lol). I didnt know I'd meet another Mysidian here on DL. Seems that Variant has been a member on DL for a long time, too.

Sorry for going a little bit off topic though, I really wish to become a good web host someday. ^^

To be completely honest, there are many web hosts that have a team manually create subdomains if necessary. I'd imagine it'd be a little difficult (and repetitive) to have a server-side script generate more server-side scripts to do server-side actions for server-side reasons, but in theory it's very plausible. I just have no idea how to do it.

And yes I'm part of Mysidia. I'm trying to be more active on the sites I go on.
